Exotic Window Tinting Frequently Asked Questions

Automotive Tint FAQs

  • What types of vehicles do you tint?

We tint cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, RVs, boats, and other eligible vehicles. Contact us with your vehicle’s year, make, and model for an accurate quote and scheduling availability.

  • What are the benefits of automotive window tint?

Window tint can improve privacy and appearance while helping reduce glare, heat, and UV exposure. It can also help protect upholstery, dashboards, and other interior materials from fading over time.

  • How long does window tint take to dry?

Tint film needs time to cure after installation. You may notice small water bubbles, haze, or a slightly cloudy appearance during the curing process; this is normal and typically clears as moisture evaporates. Drying time depends on weather, temperature, and the film used.

  • When can I roll down my windows after tinting?

Keep your windows rolled up for the period recommended by your installer depending on conditions. Opening them too early can disturb the film’s edge before it has had adequate time to bond.

  • Can you remove old window tint?

Yes, old tint can generally be removed before installing new film. Removal time and cost depend on the film’s condition, adhesive residue, rear-window defroster lines, and the size and shape of the glass.

  • Will tint affect my rear defroster or antenna?

Professional tint is installed on the glass surface and should not normally interfere with rear defroster lines or integrated antennas. However, older or damaged defroster lines require careful handling during tint removal.

  • Can window tint be installed over factory privacy glass?

Yes. Factory privacy glass is colored glass, not aftermarket film, and it often does not provide the same heat or UV performance as a quality window film. Tint can be added to achieve the desired appearance and performance, subject to legal limits.

  • Can window tint be installed over factory privacy glass?

Yes. Factory privacy glass is colored glass, not aftermarket film, and it often does not provide the same heat or UV performance as a quality window film. Tint can be added to achieve the desired appearance and performance, subject to legal limits.

  • Can I wash my vehicle after tinting?

You can wash the exterior of your vehicle, but avoid cleaning the inside of newly tinted windows until the film has cured. Once cured, use a soft microfiber cloth and ammonia-free glass cleaner.

  • Do you offer a warranty on window tint?

Warranty coverage depends on the film selected and the installation. Ask us about the warranty terms for your specific tint package before your appointment.

  • How do I schedule an appointment for my vehicle?

You can schedule an appointment by calling us at (701) 391-8752 or by sending us a message.  Our shop is located at 1511 Lockheed Dr., Unit 3, Bismarck, ND 58504.

  • How much does window tinting cost for my vehicle?

Pricing depends on the vehicle or glass area, film type, number of windows, complexity, and whether old tint must be removed. Send us your vehicle details or photos of the windows you want tinted for a tailored estimate.

  • What should I do before my vehicle appointment?

Please remove personal items from the vehicle, especially from the dashboard, rear deck, and door areas.

Home & Business Tint FAQs

  • Do you tint residential windows?

Yes. Residential window film can help reduce glare, manage sun exposure, increase daytime privacy, and help protect furnishings, flooring, and artwork from sun-related fading.

  • Do you offer commercial window tinting?

Yes. Commercial glass tinting can help businesses manage glare and sun exposure, improve employee and customer comfort, support privacy needs, and add security-film protection where appropriate.

  • What is security window film?

Security film is a thicker, protective window film designed to help hold shattered glass together after an impact or breakage. It can add a layer of delay and containment, but it is not a replacement for a complete security system or impact-rated glass where those are required.

  • Will window film make my home or business too dark?

Not necessarily. Films are available in different shades and performance levels, including more neutral or lighter options that reduce heat and glare while preserving much of the natural light. A consultation helps identify the best balance of visibility, privacy, and solar control.

  • Can window film be installed on any glass?

Not always. Compatibility depends on the glass type, construction, location, existing coatings, seal condition, and the film selected. We evaluate the glass before recommending film, especially for insulated, tempered, laminated, or specialty glass.

  • How much does window tinting cost for my home or business?

Pricing depends on the type of film used, number of windows, complexity, and whether existing tint must be removed.  Send us your details and we will be in touch with you to give you a tailored estimate for your specific needs.

  • How do I schedule an appointment for my home or business?

You can schedule an appointment by calling us at (701) 391-8752 or by sending us a message.  Our shop is located at 1511 Lockheed Dr., Unit 3, Bismarck, ND 58504.

  • What should I do before my appointment for my home or business?

Please remove any personal items and clear reasonable access to the windows you want tinted and let us know about any pets, security requirements, or access restrictions.

  • Do you provide estimates for large commercial or residential projects?

Yes.  For larger projects, provide the property address, approximate window count or dimensions, goals for the film—such as heat reduction, privacy, glare reduction, or security—and any photos or plans available.  Contact us by sending us a message, or give us a call at (701) 391-8752.

North Dakota Tint Law FAQs

  • What is the legal front-window tint limit in North Dakota?

Under N.D.C.C. § 39-21-39(4), the front side windows immediately to the left and right of the driver must allow at least 35% visible light transmission (VLT). This is the current threshold established by HB 1340.

  • What does 35% VLT mean?

VLT means visible light transmission—the percentage of visible light that passes through the window and installed tint together. A lower percentage means a darker window. For example, 35% VLT is darker than 50% VLT, while 5% VLT is much darker.

  • Is 35% tint legal on the windshield in North Dakota?

No. The 35% rule in N.D.C.C. § 39-21-39(4) applies to the front side windows immediately beside the driver. Windshield tint remains subject to the separate statutory requirements in the same section, including the requirement that the windshield allow at least 70% light transmission except for lawful material or tinting at the top of the windshield. Confirm the final configuration with your installer before installation.

  • Can I tint my rear side windows and rear windshield darker?

N.D.C.C. § 39-21-39(4) separately addresses windows behind the driver. In general, rear side and rear-window tint can be darker than the front side-window limit, but vehicles with a tinted rear window must have outside rearview mirrors on both the left and right sides. Ask Exotic Window Tinting about a configuration appropriate for your vehicle and use.

  • Does the legal tint percentage include my factory glass?

Yes. Compliance is measured by the combined light transmission of the factory glass and the aftermarket film—not simply the VLT printed on the film box. N.D.C.C. § 39-21-39(4) states that "...a window other than the windshield upon which it is displayed, affixed, or applied has a light transmittance of at least thirty-five percent. This subsection does not apply to the windows behind the operator if the motor vehicle is equipped with outside mirrors on both sides..." Factory glass can reduce the final VLT, so a professional measurement or film recommendation is important.

  • Can I have a tinted or mirrored windshield?

North Dakota law restricts materials, tinting, and obstructions on the windshield. Avoid tinting that blocks the driver’s clear view, and ask us about compliant windshield-strip options and permitted placement before installation. The applicable provision is N.D.C.C. § 39-21-39.

  • Can I choose tint that is darker than North Dakota law allows?

We can discuss available film options, but vehicle owners and drivers are responsible for complying with North Dakota law and the laws of every jurisdiction where the vehicle is driven. For the front driver and passenger windows, use the 35% VLT statutory threshold as the baseline.

  • Will Exotic Window Tinting help me choose a legal tint?

Yes. We can help you select a tint shade based on your goals for privacy, glare reduction, heat rejection, appearance, and applicable North Dakota requirements. Contact Us and let us know your vehicle’s year, make, model, and whether it has factory privacy glass so we can recommend an appropriate option.
